Celebrations under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav continues in ICAR-CIPHET by organizing Knowledge Series Webinar

 

ICAR-CIPHET is celebrating the 75th year of India’s independence through conduct of variety of programmes. Organization of different webinar series is one such initiative; under its “Knowledge Webinar Series” a national webinar was held on a very pertinent topic ‘A sustainable option for agricultural crop residues management through mushroom production’. A practical and cost effective environment friendly approach for crop residue management is its utilization through mushroom production. Dr V.P. Sharma, Director, Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan was the keynote speaker and talked on Production of mushroom for utilizing agricultural residues and value addition of mushrooms. Dr. Sharma presented a comprehensive statistical data of the various crop residues, and also elaborated on utilization of paddy straw for mushroom cultivation. He delineated strategies for involving startups in mushroom production and commented that in next 2-3 years the mushroom production in India can surpass the production figures of America.  Dr. R.C. Kasana, Principal Scientist, and coordinator of this webinar talked on possibility and efforts in the area of developing packaging materials using mushroom mycelium and crop residues as raw material. This being an innovative and important research area is of the focus by scientific community to bring sustainable and biodegradable packaging solutions, which can serve the requirements of environment friendly alternative to plastic menace. Dr. Rahul K. Anurag, Scientist of the institute talked on the mushroom quality and its packaging for shelf-life enhancement.

The programme was attended by about 120 participants including researchers, progressive farmers, budding entrepreneurs, students and others associated with mushroom cultivation. Dr. Nachiket Kotwaliwale, Director ICAR-CIPHET welcomed all the participants into this webinar, and motivated all present to initiate start-up activities by knowledge shared in this important area. He assured for more knowledge and technical support to interested stakeholders. Dr. K. Narsaiah AS&EC Division thanked all the speaker for sharing valuable knowledge along with all participants. The hosting and technical support was carried out by Dr Bidyalakshmi, Scientist, AS&EC Division.
